Are you ready to make a meaningful impact in your community? As an Emergency Shelter Volunteer (formerly Adult Care Volunteer), you’ll be at the frontline of change, providing essential support to individuals in need at our emergency shelter.

Why This Role Matters

In partnership with our dedicated shelter staff, you’ll be a vital part of delivering services to individuals experiencing homelessness. Your tasks will include:

  • Replenishing Supplies: Ensure that our guests have everything they need.
  • Promote Awareness: Encourage guests to connect with our services & resources.
  • Assisting with Guest Check-Ins: Be the welcoming face that helps guests feel supported and valued.
  • Cleaning and Overseeing Activities: Help create a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment for all.

What You Need to Know

To become an Emergency Shelter Volunteer, you’ll complete a thorough onboarding process, including an interview and background check. Training will be provided both online and in-person.

Key requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Legally eligible to work and train in Canada.
  • Provide two professional references.
  • Complete a Police Screening.
  • Intermediate to advanced English proficiency is essential.
  • 10 hours of previous volunteer experience with the Drop-In Centre

Working Conditions 

Emergency Shelter Volunteers can be exposed to emotionally disturbing events, 
such as: medical distress, threatened and/or actual serious injury, violence, abuse, and death;
where clients may be experiencing fear, terror, hopelessness, rage, self-harm and conflict.
It is understood and accepted that you will be working in an environment where bodily fluids may also occur.
